'Richard has surveyed a number of vessels for me, and I must say the advice and the service have been second to none. Had it not been for their professionalism and skill I would have paid good money where I should not. I cannot thank them enough'.

Yacht and Motorboat Valuation Surveyors

There are many reasons to hire us for a boat or yacht valuation survey, as an insurance company will often require a value as part of a pre-purchase surveyors report or specific insurance survey.  It should be remembered that ultimate value of an object is what someone is willing to pay for it.  Therefore in the case of a pre-purchase the value of vessel is the price being paid, this is also how the insurance company often sees it.

We subscribe to Soldboats.com which is a database of boats that have been sold by 2,400 yacht brokers across the world.  There are over 500,000 boats listed, it details the listing price, sale price and relevant dates.  This information can be incredibly powerful since we can see how long a boat has taken to sell and what someone has been prepared to sell it for.

However, depending on the importance of the valuation the more stringent the process required to derive it.  For example, the valuation for the court in a divorce hearing needs to substantiated for a high degree.

The basic principles of the valuation are a combination of the following:

  • Investigation of similar vessels on the market
  • Investigation into recently sold vessels
  • Expert opinion from relevant brokers
  • Market conditions
  • Factor in value added components such as level of navigational equipment

In order the value the yacht a base structural survey will have to done along with the systems on board.  A similar process to an insurance survey.

Once all the information is gathered, the valuation can be derived.
